GT VW Readout
The new instrument is smaller than its predecessors and is housed in a plastic case. It is supplied with nylon, weatherproof carrying case and a set of connecting leads. It is a plucked pulse device and the general specification is unchanged from the previous models, except that individual components of the circuitry have been replaced with smaller, higher specification equivalents, reducing the overall size of the readout. The GT1174 - 3 retains the accurate quartz crystal oscillator of previous models to generate the controlled pulse necessary to energise the coil of the transducer that is connected. The transducer coil first attracts, then releases, the vibrating wire element. The coil then sends the signal, from the vibrating wire, back to the unit. The quartz crystal oscillator also provides a precise time base for the measurement of the period of vibration of the wire. The liquid crystal display shows the time in seconds for 100 cycles of vibration. The signal from a transducer with a long vibrating wire, at a low frequency, decays slowly. The first few vibrations of the wire may not give a clean signal. The delay between plucking the wire and taking a measurement may need to be increased. Similarly, the signal from a transducer with a short wire at a high frequency decays quickly and the pluck delay may need to reduced. The GT1174 - 3 has an auto delay feature which compensates for the wide variation in frequencies from different types of transducer. The unit is battery powered and has loudspeaker to monitor the audio signal from the vibrating wire transducer. The quality of the audio tone is an indication of a successful installation. An internal reference source, the quartz crystal oscillator, acts as an operational check. Product: GT 1 174 - 3 Vibrating Wire Readout. Input terminals: 2 standard 4 mm banana socket.
